**Job Description:**
The Shop Manager oversees all operations of the fabrication shop in an exhibit design firm. This includes supervising fabrication personnel, managing inventory, ensuring safety protocols are upheld, and coordinating with other departments to ensure efficient workflow and timely production. The Shop Manager plays a crucial role in translating design concepts into tangible, high-quality exhibits.
**Responsibilities and Duties:**
1. **Oversee Shop Operations:** Manage daily operations in the fabrication shop, ensuring projects are completed on time and to the highest quality standards.
2. **Supervise Fabrication Staff:** Lead and manage the fabrication team, providing direction, support, and feedback.
3. **Ensure Safety:** Implement and uphold safety standards in the shop, ensuring all staff follow protocols to maintain a safe working environment.
4. **Inventory Management:** Manage shop inventory, including tools, materials, and equipment. Ensure all supplies are available as needed and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers.
5. **Quality Control:** Oversee the quality of work produced in the shop, ensuring it meets both the firm's and clients' expectations.
6. **Collaborate with Design and Project Management Teams:** Work closely with the design and project management teams to understand project requirements and timelines.
7. **Staff Training:** Train staff in the use of tools and equipment, safety protocols, and the specific fabrication techniques required for each project.
8. **Maintain Shop Equipment:** Ensure all shop equipment is properly maintained and in good working order.
**Qualifications and Skills:**
- Proven experience managing a shop, preferably within the exhibit design or a related industry.
- Strong knowledge of fabrication processes and techniques, and safety protocols.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Proficiency in inventory management and quality control.
- Ability to read and interpret design plans and specifications.

**Work Environment:**
The Shop Manager typically works in the fabrication shop within the exhibit design firm. This role requires a hands-on approach and physical presence in the shop, meaning remote work is generally not possible. The position might require extended hours during peak periods to meet project deadlines. Safety equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves, or ear protection, may be required when in the shop area. Depending on the specifics of the role and the firm, there may be opportunities for on-site work during the installation of exhibits.
